A propósito de poemas traduzidos para o inglês
Depois de meia dúzia de poemas traduzidos para a língua inglesa, por Linda Marshall, professora de literatura aposentada, por meu filho mais velho, ele próprio leitor de boa poesia, e por mim próprio com muitas debilidades e imperfeições, tenho-me perguntado porquê.
A resposta imediata estará no aparecimento «físico» desses poemas em websites como Allpoetry, Poets.Org da Academy of American Poets e PoetryConnection.net, e, já agora, nos comentários de leitores e utilizadores desses fóruns de discussão, alguns acolhendo com surpresa a poesia portuguesa, à qual reconhecem geralmente uma aura de mistério, de sortilégio lírico e de inspiração, manifestando interesse em conhecê-la.
A resposta seguinte está nestas palavras do poeta Mário Dionísio «Concluído o livro, deveria escondê-lo, quer dizer: esconder-me? Teremos o direito de esconder-nos? ». Este poeta do Novo-Cancioneiro, figura marcante do neo-realismo português, escreveu-as a propósito do seu livro de poemas escritos originalmente na língua francesa, Le feu qui dort (Publicações Europa-América, 1967). Narra ainda o poeta e romancista o princípio dessa aventura da escrita em língua estranha, ainda que o autor estivesse ligado à cultura francesa: «Inesperadamente, numa tarde terrivelmente deserta, reparei que dizia sem saber porquê: “O toi ma clef O toi mon ombre et ma clairière“… Respirava, sem poder nem querer preocupar-me com a língua em que o fazia.»
Temos o dever de não nos escondermos.

É sempre bom que se traduzam para outras línguas o que de bom se escreve em Portugal. Tanto em poesia como em prosa. Mas, sobretudo em poesia, a tradução levanta inúmeras dificuldades. O produto final, por melhor que seja, acaba por dever sempre algo ao tradutor, em detrimento do autor. Daí o ditado italiano: “tradutore, traditore”
